“One day I must go to Pieria…”

One day I must go to Pieria
……………. follow that lovely goddess
………… to her source

…………….. gather the white roses
…………………………………for the Muses

else in the House of the Dead
……………………………..invisible
……………………………a flitting thing

………………………………………….I shall
………………….. wander in that dim world

…………………………. forgotten

    • I like the way you say “almost”… 🙂

Yes, been reading through Sappho translations again, picked up Stanley Lombardo’s and doing a sort of point counter-point in answer to her almost ephemeral and wispy movements from the fragments that remain…

In this instance she describes herself as being lost and unremembered because she never made it to Pieria to gather roses, so will end forgotten and even in the dim world of Hades nothing but a fleeting wisp…

So I pick up the thread with needing to go there to do what she was unable to do… which actually would be lovely! I would love to plan a trip to Pieria the vale below Mount Olympus where the sacred springs once existed… to me that would be a sort of pilgrimage for poetry. As well as a pilgrimage to fulfill her wishes… 🙂

Long ago my first poems were written after reading a version of the Sapphic fragments by Mary Bernard… that is where it began, so I harbor Sappho as my poetess of influence who is an ever present presence, almost an interlocutor within…
